The infrastructure in the coastal areas of the Arabian Gulf Region is exposed to one of the most aggressive condition in the world as a result the existing structures show loss of serviceability well before the design services life. The effect is more pronounces in reinforced concrete structures, which have shown severe deterioration due to corrosion of the reinforcing steel after a short period of ten years in service. The existing structures require repair to make them serviceable as well as protection against further deterioration to extend their service lives. New structures require judicious selection of design, material and construction specifications that match with the existing severe exposure conditions.

Concrete repair, unfortunately, is considered by many as patching the spilled concrete and injecting the cracks. Proper structural repair and concrete durability design are essential in restoring the lost serviceability and extending the service life of a structure.These should be recognized as specialist areas and dealt with in the manner. Even today, the durability aspect is rarely considered at the design stage by many consultants.
